DERMATOLOGY is the study of the skin and its accessory structures and disease associated with them. "Derm" means skin and 'logos' means to study. The skin is the largest organ of the body with a surface area of 2 square meters. It accounts for 20% of the total body weight of a human being.

The skin as such can be divided into the skin proper and the accessory structures. 'The skin proper" is divided into the epidermis (the most superficial part of the skin), the dermis (the next layer) and subcutaneous tissue (nothing but a layer of fat). "The accessory structures" include the hair, the nails and large variety of glands (sweat glands and sebaceous glands) and receptors for sensation.
